The Single Fin Mingle
After two marvellous events, The Single Fin Mingle- Traditional Surfing Competition will hold its third instalment on the weekend of the 31st of March to the 2nd of April 2017 in Sumner, Christchurch. What started as joyous local affair has now cemented its place as one of the world’s foremost longboarding events on the international calendar.
Although the competition is sure to be hotly contested and a fantastic spectacle for all, ‘the mingle’ has always placed an emphasis on having fun and socialising. At the contest sight at Scarborough beach, spectators will be able to browse market stalls and sample delicious food and coffee while watching world class surfing. In the evenings there will be numerous social events which are open for the public to attend.
Friday night will begin with an opening ceremony and powhiri at the Sumner Surf LifeSaving club followed by a film evening at the Hollywood cinema. On Saturday night top local band The Butlers will be the feature act at the Single Fin Mingling event party to be held at the Sumner community hall. After the finals are completed on Sunday a prize giving will be held at the Sumner Surf lifesaving club and followed by very special performance from iconic New Zealand Jazz singer Malcolm McNeill.
Former New Zealand Surfing champion and Single Fin Mingle winner Mischa Davis of Piha, will travel to compete in her third mingle. Mischa states, “I think what I love most about The Single Fin Mingle is the supportive community in Sumner-it’s such a special place. The event itself feels more like a festival than a surfing competition. Everyone feels welcome and you don't have to be competing to have a good time.”
The stage is set for another amazing event that is sure to showcase the beautiful waves, community and culture of Sumner to the world. Whether you’re a surfer or not The Single Fin Mingle is an event not be missed!
