FRIDAY TUNES WITH OLIVIA
This week is the first official week of summer here in Australia, although it has kind of felt like it hasn't really left. We have been blessed with a fairly stable climate here, long sunny days, small glassy waves - all in all a pretty good time really!
This weeks Atunes comes from an all-round top chick, Olivia. This happy-go-lucky, animal loving, fun time seeking, multi talent super human is as cool as a gentle breeze against sun kissed skin in summer. We love everything Olivia is about, from her humour, to incredible talent behind the lens and her immense passion for animals the conservation of Australian Wildlife.
This playlist is diverse and a damn good time. Turn it up and enjoy.
Watch this space for some real dreamy good times coming up with Olivia x Atmosea soon! Boy oh boy we are excited...
Describe to us your ultimate dream day
Starting it early I will be listing to my CD track 5 “Seabird” by the Alessi Brothers, with Gus (My dog) riding shot gun driving down to the beach, taking Gus for a walk then going for a wee body surf. After that a big bowl of Reese Puffs with organic milk then skating with my best friend Taniah Meyers, she is way better at skateboarding, but anyways, climbing up Mt Ninderry then going to the beach for an arvy beer or two with Erin & Jerry, eating a curry made by Erin and watching the sun go down and a cheeky skinny dip. This is my dream day.
What is a social or environmental issue that hits close to home for you?
Australia has a large and diverse range of unique wildlife & plants that will not be around for ever. Our wildlife can’t speak, but humans can speak and they are allowing & responsible for habitat destruction, climate change, pollution and more. From cutting down eucalyptus to build bigger high rises - the Koalas to have no homes left, to Equinor wanting to drill for more oil , where oil would end up spread up and down our beaut coast line, that will kill seabirds and marine animals. It just makes no sense to why humans are letting this happen. I don’t understand how there can be so many species that are already critically endangered and more to be added to this big list, and humans still make these stupid decisions.
How do you measure success?
Usually with a tape measure, ha okay I’ll stop being stupid. I guess for me being happy and nice to people, it’s not hard to smile and say G’day to someone to ask how their day was.
If you could only wear one colour for the rest of your life, what colour would it be?
All white head to toe, cause I think it looks pretty classy.
Your fav meal to share with family and friends?
Ooooooolalala food, I love all types of food. But I really love my mum’s salmon ramen dish that she puts a heap of bok choy, ginger, thick noodles and a nice piece of salmon from our local fish shop. My mum is a real good cook and I love her ha.
Do you have any irrational fears or phobias?
A fear of eggs, yeah I fucking hate eggs with a passion. Scrabbled, fried, poached, baked, omelet anyway you can have eggs I am not keen on them, a few of the crew I work with always eat them and leave egg shells on the table. Pretty rank if I may say so. A fear of drowning too.
What do you often ponder when you are in the car by yourself?
I ponder a lot of about life and what I am doing with my life. Am I doing the right thing, hanging with the right people, saying the right things. For right now where I am as an 19year old lass I am enjoying every little bit about how I am doing life. A wee bit of pondering also about what am I going to eat next happens a lot.
If you aren’t shooting surf photography, what else do you find yourself doing?
I am a Zoo keeper at Australia Zoo in Beerwah and work also at Thomas Surfboards in Noosa. It’s a real cool combo of the two diversities of what I do at both work places. The team I work with up at Noosa Thomas Surfboards is great, from Doc & Jake always working their butts off to Mel (the QUEEN) keeping everyone in line and the groms & everyone else in between who I adore & just love, I appreciate working with a good team who are all like family. Then the Zoo with a bunch of crazy animals and crazy workers it’s a job I have always wanted to do as a little kid, stoked to be working with Emus too as they are iconic. It’s a very physical job, I am always walking a lot, and that I enjoy because I could not do a sit down 9-5 office job. A balance with everything is sometimes hard but I guess life isn’t always easy…
What is your favourite surfing memory?
When Hunter and I went up to Double Island in his dads old rusty Toyota 1976 Land cruiser troopy, we got up super early got a water melon from Woolies and shot over on the barge to be the only car up at the point. Super clean small waves, sun was hot as hot chips and a shit tone of rubbish on the beach we picked up after our surf. With a heap of fish in the water myself and Hunter having a ball of fun wave after wave. We got super cooked from the sun but I had one hell of a day with one of the bestest Humans alive Hunter Vercoe, Bless him.
Life motto?
“Don’t be an egg” & “No matter how educated, talented, rich or cool you are, how you treat people ultimately tells all, Integrity is everything” I like them both. “Don’t be an egg” is one I say to a lot of people, but there are good eggs & bad eggs.
