It's nice to be here
Art by Byron’s Brianna O’Connell.
'There’s this really cool common experience astronauts describe called the Overview Effect. It’s said that the experience of seeing Earth from space is so awe-inspiring and profound it alters their perspective of what it means to be a part of life on Earth.
Our big world suddenly teeny tiny compared to the seemingly never ending, dark, vastness of space that surrounds it. Planet Earth appears fragile, vulnerable and with finite resources. This new viewpoint also inspires the world to be realised as a whole, without defined capital cities, countries or borders that divide Earth’s inhabitants. Astronauts describe feeling an awesome appreciation for our planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life upon it and a renewed sense of responsibility to care for the environment.
I was thinking of the Overview Effect when I made this print. Unfortunately we can’t all go to space to get the new perspective needed to save our planet but I don’t think we need to. There are so many awe-inspiring moments to be had right here on Earth. Some are beautiful, some, as we have seen in recent years are terrifying. I’m scared and anxious for our planet but I can see that there is a global consciousness growing, small changes are making big changes.
If you find yourself wearing this print I hope it encourages you to connect with nature, get a little perspective and work towards a brighter future.
Look around, it’s nice to be here, let’s stay here. What do we need to do to make that happen?
